The Whale Expanse water heater - a superb quality heater as expected from Whale with their 70 years of industry experience.

The Expanse water heater is a lightweight and compact water heater that allows you to make the most of the living space in your caravan or motorhome. This underfloor model mounts to the underside of the vehicle, with the only interior modifications required being 4 bolt holes and a 216mm x 60mm cutout in the floor to secure the heater to the vehicle and allow access to the water and electrical connections respectively.

So how do you know if you can have one? For the underfloor mounted version there are a few criteria to keep in mind:

    • As this unit uses 12V DC electrics for the control panel & ignition as well as 230V AC mains electricity and gas for powering the unit, suitable systems for all 3 are required.
    • If you are fitting to a caravan, the heater must be positioned as close to the axle as possible to ensure even weight distribution – DO NOT fit at the very rear or very front of the caravan.
    • The heater must be located between chassis members that are at least 180mm deep to ensure the unit is protected from the curb. This location also needs to be rated to at least 70 degrees Celsius and allow access for servicing.
    • The flue for this unit routes to the side valence of the vehicle and has to conform to some specific stipulations:
      • The flue must be fitted to the side of the vehicle that an awning will never be fitted to.
      • It cannot be fitted within 500mm of a refuelling point, fuel tank breather outlet or any ventilator for from the fuel system.
      • It cannot be fitted with 300mm of a ventilator for the living space or an opening part of a window.
      • This unit has the option to be powered by 230V AC mains electricity, gas, or both simultaneously.

    Features

    Easy Installation

The compact and efficient design of the Expanse makes installation simple – the underfloor model simply requires drilling of 4 bolt holes, along with a small cutout in the floor to allow access to the water connections and drain valve.

Fast heat up & long heat retention

The Expanse has 2 options for wattage, 750W and 1500W. It produces enough hot water for a 14 litre shower in just 11 minutes. The 8L tank replenishes as water is used in order to achieve this.

    Frost Protection Mode

If temperatures are getting close to, or below zero degrees Celsius, the Expanse water heater can be turned onto a low heat setting to keep the tank above freezing to prevent ice forming and causing frost damage in cold weather. The frost protection setting can be used continuously for up to 3 days, though you should check periodically to make sure it is still on. If the vehicle is going to be unused for more than 3 days, the full water system needs to be drained, as frost damage is not covered under warranty.

    Quiet Operation

While not completely silent, the Expanse water heater during normal operation won't cause a ruckus.

    Balanced Flue System

The balanced flue system employed by the Expanse water heater consists of 2 flues, a 40mm intake and a 22mm exhaust flue which runs along the interior of the 40mm flue.

Ordinarily, the intake and exhaust of a water heater are separate ports, and you will have to cut out a large hole on the side of your vehicle to fit a flue plate and cover – a balanced flue means this is no longer the case as it mounts to the side valence of your vehicle, and with up to 2 metres of flue available, you have greater flexibility on how to route it.

The balanced flue is an integral part of the Expanse water heater, aiding in making combustion as efficient as possible, with the added benefits of better wind resistance and altitude performance than a standard flue.

    Robust Casing

To improve impact resistance, the polypropylene casing is made up of 20% glass fibres.

    Great Insulation

Expanded polystyrene insulation makes the Expanse a market leader in heat retention.

    Compatibility

The Whale Expanse water heater is for use only in road vehicles such as caravans and motorhomes. It is NOT suitable for caravan holiday homes e.g. mobile homes or static caravans
